Owning a boat or watercraft can be a lot of fun, but it is important that you maintain them properly or you will most likely have problems with the engine and propulsion system in the boat over time. Getting the right parts is critical, and you need to make sure that all the products you use are rating for use in marine applications.

Preseason Maintenance

Before the boat goes into the water for the year, it is important to check the motor and lower unit or transmission to make sure everything is in good shape. Changing the oil in both the engine and transmission are critical, along with lubricating all of the linkages and cables that control functions on the boat.

Using oil, filters, and lubricants that are intended for marine use is important as well. You can get the right oil, filters, and lube from any good marine parts and accessories dealer. If you are not sure what you need for your boat, talk to the folks at your local marine shop and they can help you select the right products for the job.

Cleaning and Polishing

Keeping your boat clean makes it look nice, but it also protects the finish and the chrome and polished metalwork from the water. Like your parts, there are specific products that work well for your boat care and finding the ones that are made specifically for the materials your boat is made out with net the best results.

There are generic polishes and cleaning products that will work on your boat, but if you visit the marine supply store, they can suggest cleaners and polishes that they know work well. Some marine supplies also have a shop for repairs and may even offer cleaning and detailing that you may want to take advantage of to get your boat ready for the spring boating season.

Trailer Maintenance

If you do not leave your boat in the water all summer, the trailer you use to take it to the water and then home should be part of the maintenance plan. Check the tires for damage and replace any that show signs of wear or dry rot right away.

Check the lights and the wiring on the trailer, making sure that all the light work and that the trailer brakes are working if your trailer is equipped with them. And lastly, check the wheel bearings and have them lubed before you start hauling the boat around on the trailer. The goal is to ensure the trailer is safe and keep you enjoying your boat, not dealing with breakdowns that should not be a problem.
