When people think about getting the parts they need to repair their car at a salvage yard, they often only think about large parts. There are often many great smaller parts that can be found at a salvage yard for very inexpensive prices as well. The following guide will help you remember a few small parts you can also get from a salvage yard.
Mirrors
Both side and rear-view mirrors can be found at a salvage yard. Do not worry about trying to find cars that are exactly the same color as your car. The outside of the mirrors can be painted to match your car after they are installed.
Handles
If the handles on the outside or inside of your vehicle are not working properly, you can easily replace them by finding identical handles in a vehicle at a salvage yard. The inner door panel of most cars pops free from the door frame by placing a screwdriver between the frame and the panel. Once you pop the panel loose, you will have access to the handle and the mechanism that opens the door. You can remove everything you need with a few turns of a screwdriver.
Knobs
If you are missing any knobs on the dashboard of your car, you can get replacements at a salvage yard. The knobs should pull free from the dashboard if you place the edge of a flathead screwdriver between the dashboard and the knob.
Latches
The door latches and trunk latch on cars can often weaken over time. If your trunk will no longer close with ease, you can get a replacement latch at the salvage yard to use on the trunk. The latch is held on with just a few screws so removing it from a vehicle will take just a few minutes to do.
Antennas
The antennas on older cars often snap and break over time. Older antennas simply screwed onto vehicles. You should be able to use a pair of pliers to turn the antenna and remove it from a car in the salvage yard. When you get back to your car, use the pliers to remove the broken antenna and then replace it with the new antenna you got from the salvage yard.
Buying these small items in brand new condition can quickly add up and cost you a small fortune.
